“When the heart is at ease, the body is healthy”– Chinese Proverb
“It’s not what happens to you, but how you react to it that matters.”– Epictetus
My name is Dion. I’m a married father of three boys. Four years ago, I was diagnosed with depression, which at one point saw me involuntarily hospitalised. I tried different medications, different therapies, and seeing different mental health professionals; none of it seemed to work. By that, I mean, none of it made me feel the way I used to feel.
With the support of my wife, and my employers, I eventually realised I was never going to feel the way I used to feel. Marriage, three children, two of which have their own mental health conditions, as well as being in a career which had me in an almost constant state of hyper-vigilance and varying degrees of stress, meant I could never just go back to how i used to be. All that had left an indelible mark.
So, I did some research. I read, I read, and I read some more. I wrote down what I thought my problems were. I listed them, and I made strategies to change the behaviours that i thought were leading to those issues.
The goal of this blog is to pass on some of the strategies I’ve used, along with other tips and tricks to help with mental and physical health, in the hope that it will help people before they reach the depths I had plummeted to. It’s much easier to avoid the hole, than climb out of it.
